Michaela Gogova is London-based artist, who relocated to the UK from Slovakia in 2006. As already a playful child, Michaela was always drawn to creative processes, whether it was drawing, playing or acting. In her mid-teens, it was during student conference when she doodled a pattern that was to become the forefront of her artistic journey that we see today.
She picked up a brush and painted her first painting, Flower Shop, in the UK. From then on, playing with ideas, dreams, forms of expression and personal experiences is what Michaela is interested in. Her inquisitive nature leads her work that transpires in layers on her paintings, in brushstrokes or the paint colour choices. She is intrigued by forms: squares, rectangles, sharp edges, and challenges their place in her work and her mind.
Why do you see square when what is painted is fresh air after early morning autumn rain?
Michaela paints intuitively, and without rules. She draws on her instinct and feeling of the moment, however she often starts with an idea in her head, dream or a visual memory. She then follows the painting’s narrative and has a ‘conversation with the canvas’.
Moving between pattern, sharp edged forms or flowing layers, Michaela challenges her viewer’s senses and invites her audience to create a story and explore the world of imagination and intrigue.
Michaela is a self-taught artist who briefly trained at Central St Martins. She lives in London, UK and works from a studio at Wimbledon Art Studios.
